There is a saying that you do not fail until you stop trying.
What are some of the common characteristics experienced by adults growing up in alcoholic homes?
1. Unsure what "normal" family life is
Adults who grew up in a home that was full of arguments, unpredictibility, etc; they may see chaos as part of the "normal" life. As they enter into adulthood, they may find themselves confused in how to operate a "normal" and "stabilized" family life.
2. Overcritical of self
Adults growing up with a chaotic family background may find themselves to be self critical. They do not see their positive stregnths, but flaws. They do not accept compliments from others well. They see what is "missing".
3. Self-doubt
This originates from an unstable family background. Adults who had a childhood being deprived of guidance and nurture due to parents' preoccupation with personal problems; they may be lack of self-assurance. They may look for repeated and constant affirmation in relationships. This can be unhealthy depending on the nature of the relationships.
